Writing
Public Relations Communications
I developed professional writing skills essential for public relations, focusing on crafting strategic communications within planned campaigns. I gained a strong understanding of communication theories and practices that shape effective PR techniques. Working with a local, Athens client, I learned to write for various media formats, including traditional, digital, and direct communications, ensuring messages align with organizational objectives. Additionally, I explored how to integrate research, implementation, and evaluation strategies into a comprehensive public relations plan for organizations.
Reporting
I had the opportunity to be on the diversity and equity beat for my reporting I class, where I reported on DEI around UGA and the Athens community.
Beat Story Pitch Competition
Each semester there is a group competition where teams from every Reporting I class pitch a story to a panel of judges who look for multimedia elements, newsworthiness, depth of reporting, and more. Out of the five beat groups in my class, my team won and advanced to the final round. The winning groups from each of the nine classes presented again, and my team won first place. Our story focused on how activist student organizations at UGA were shifting focus to strengthen their in-person events, rather than online options, in preparation for the 2024 presidential election. Click to view our pitch document and make sure to ask me about the experience.
